Katie & Tim { snowy engagement sneak peek }

Engagement photos with a puppy

Everyone…I’d like you to meet Katie, Tim and Max.  Max is the little one, with the brown fur and the gorgeous blue eyes.  I’ll be honest…when Katie told me she’d be bringing her dog to the engagement session, I expected someone a little more mature.  But this was definitely a pleasant surprise!  I love, love, love puppies!  {Who doesn’t??}  And I’ll be totally transparent, Max kind of stole the show.  {How could he not?}

Now I’m getting off topic.  Katie and Tim are engaged and they’ll be starting their together-forever as husband and wife in October, and I am so flattered and honored that they chose me to photograph their engagement.  We had a picture perfect winter day and I could hardly take my eyes off of Katie’s fabulous hair.  {So.  Pretty.}  These two are full of personality and silly moments.  I love couples who laugh together.  I got so many good shots of candid, fun moments with these two I couldn’t really narrow things down–which is why it’s taken a little longer than I would have liked to get their preview up online.  But alas, here is it, gorgeous photos from a lovely day, with an even lovelier couple.  Take a look.

Candid Engagement Photos

Oh, and did I mention that there was a near miss with a little snow fight?

starbucks cup engagement photos

Katie is a barista at Starbucks, so one shot she knew she wanted included Mr. and Mrs. coffee cups.  Such a cute idea that showed off her personal style.  And speaking of style—take note here.  I get asked all the time, “What should I wear to my session?”  Well, Katie nailed it.  I want the outfit she is wearing.  She’s got classic pieces that aren’t going to look dated years down the line.  Then she added some “now” touches, like the cuffed jeans, wedge ankle boots and a chunky necklace–that keep things looking modern.  And the texture in the sweater and flannel gives great dimension to the images. Love it!

Again, I’m simply honored that this couple trusted me to capture these moments.  Congratulations on your engagement–savor this sweet season.  I hope you enjoy this preview–your flash drive is going in the mail today!

Emily + Author { Winter Engagement Photos }

winter engagement photos

I remember it clearly.  This adorable, red-headed teenager asked if we could get together and talk.  So we did.  We met at Pita Pit and over sandwiches–excuse me, pitas–I got to know Emily.  We talked about prom and how I couldn’t get a date to save my life in high school and how maybe I should read the signs a little better when three guys turned me down for prom.  But I went anyway, and survived, and eventually all the weirdness that high school can bring gradually faded and I was left with a little more clarity and pockets of crazy stories to tell.

She mentioned Snap Chat and I played it really cool–like I totally knew what that was.  In reality, after the pitas were gone and the iced tea consumed I immediately went to my car and Googled “snap chat” from the parking lot.

As time went on, the drama of high school and prom subsided–as it always does–but we kept meeting.  Mostly for coffee, mostly early in the morning before her classes at the university started.  And while I’m not a morning person, chatting with Emily and researching Scripture with her was a morning worth starting early.  It was one of these days that I first heard about a boy named Author.  “Aurthur?”  “No…Author.  Like an author.”

winter engagement session

I called him Aurthur in our conversations for months–but I’m finally getting the hang of it.  Just in time too…because this boy I heard of once upon an Americano-one-pump-of-vanilla-room-for-cream—is sticking around indefinitely.  These two are engaged and I couldn’t be more excited.  I love that their relationship is rooted in Christ.  I love that Author spoke with our pastor and Emily’s dad before proposing.  I love that they are in love with each other, but even more in love with the Lord.  It’s a beautiful thing.

winter engagement photo ideas

As with most winter photo sessions, these winter engagement photos were scheduled and rescheduled several times before we got it right, but in the end we had a gorgeous day.  And I’m in love with the results.  Congratulations guys!!  And thank you for choosing me to capture your engagement.  What an honor!

A Cord of Three Strands {Kate + Jacob}

Minot Engagement Session

This is Kate and Jacob.  Aren’t they precious?  They are getting married in October and I am so very excited for them!!  Kate and I have gotten to know each other over the past year through our women’s Bible study at church.  This is what marriage is about people…two people, committed to loving each other and glorifying God through their union.  It’s awesome.

Now, I must say, this was one of the most adventurous sessions I’ve ever shot.  We started our session in a local park.  But that didn’t last long because the mosquitoes chased us away.  They were so bad I couldn’t even stand still to take a single shot.  They were flocking to my fingers, my legs, my hair.  They looked like clouds of gnats…so gross!

So we ditched that idea and headed to a sandy bank by the river.  I laid out some plastic and a quilt for the happy couple to sit on.  When I was finished laying out the quilt I about pooped my pants when I saw a special visitor right next to us…

YIKES!  It’s a GIANT snapping turtle!  So scary.  {I’m a whip, okay?}

So again, we took just a few and left.  But first we picked up a couple cans of bug spray.

We smelled bad, but at least we didn’t get any more bites.  Okay, now to the real stuff.

Jacob is a golfer and soon, they will be taking up golf together.  In fact, the couple is so enthused, that Jacob actually hid Kate’s engagement ring in a set of clubs he bought for her birthday.  Adorable.

As I alluded to earlier, one of my favorite things about this couple is their deeply rooted faith.  I can tell you from experience, a couple who lives in the Word will grow to have a strong marriage.  When their wedding was 150 days away Kate and Jacob began reading one Psalm each day together.  On the day of their session they chose to do their daily study in front of the camera.

You can see more from this adorable session tomorrow on the Facebook page!

Christmas Portraits {So pretty}

Creating a solid Christmas cards has been one of my favorite traditions since college.  Whether posting with my roommates or snapping a quick picture with Derek…the Christmas card is a magical thing.

This year, it occurred to me to spread the world of Christmas card possibility to some of my friends.  I mean, I own a fancy camera and a production business…if cute photos aren’t a perk of the friendship, I’m not sure what is.

Lucky for me…my friends are simply precious.  Get ready to feast your eyes on two cute couples {and one awkward couple}.  Get ready to pin some sweet ideas for your own portraits.

Fun Couples Christmas Portraits

Don’t Sean and Katie remind you of a Forever 21 ad?  They are so beautiful.  I just love their style.

Couples Christmas Portraits

Like that banner?  I made it in about an hour.  I cut letters out of poster board then taped wrapping paper to the front of them.  Punch holes in the letters and weave yarn through.  Easy as pie.

Now say a hardy “Hullo” to Mallory and Kyle.  See, I told you my friends are cute!  These two just had their first anniversary…congrats, guys!

Couple's Christmas Portrait Ideas

Christmas portraits for couples

Okay.  Now a few portraits of an awkward couple.  You guessed it.  Me and Derek.  Here’s the thing.  I want photos of us that look this cute.  The hard part is that I’m the photographer.  So any portraits of us have to be shot on self timer.  Boo.  So, what ends up happening is, I find a cute location…I push the button…we have 10 seconds…and we choke.  When that little organge light is blinking at us, we forget everything about looking good and cute…and we {I} look like a hot mess.

This particular time we chose a location full of weeds and grass to trip on.  So, I pushed the button then began to run to meet Derek.  I tripped multiple times, my hair got a little ratty and my eyeliner started to run.  Smile.  Click.  Dang…I look awful.  So I compiled these photos.  The best of the bunch…but still a bit awkward, if you ask me.

Couples Christmas card photos

The best ones are where I am NOT looking at the camera.  But aren’t we always harder on ourselves?  {PS…I’m not fishing for compliments here.  Compliment my cuter, more photogenic friends instead.}

Couple's Christmas photo with lights

But if there is one thing I’ve learned in recent days {like with my Christmas tree} if you put some white lights on it and look at it at dusk…even the most awkward thing can look beautiful.

Here’s a napkin.  You can stop drooling now.  Don’t you just love romantic Christmas portraits?
