Pops-piration

About a week ago I found myself in Bismarck.  Naturally, while there I was faced with a difficult decision:  TJ Maxx or boutique shopping?  I went the boutique route and found myself at a darling place called Junk Yard Chic.  Their wares boast gifts of the salvaged, shabby-chic, rustic variety.

When I checked out, my goods were carefully wrapped in the cutest Popsicle tissue paper I’ve ever seen.  Which got me thinking all about summer’s best treat, and how I could incorporate those fun, sweet, melty colors and flavors into my life this summer.  Here are seven great things I came across.

popsicle roundup

1.  I have been itching to host a summer ice cream social.  But I might just do a Popsicle social instead.  These invitations from Free Pretty Printables are sooo cute I could eat them up.  Oh, yeah.  And they are FREE!

2.  There are a ton of amazing popsicle recipes floating around on Pinterest these days.  I fell in love with the wholesome ingredients and easy prep for these made with blueberries, strawberries and honey.  Get the recipe here.  The blog, In Sock Monkey Slippers recommends this mold.

3.  Dreamcicles anyone?  Those are soap!  Yes, soap.  The perfect summer gift for a summer hostess.  Get them from Sun Kid Gifts on Etsy.

4.  If technology is more your style, sport this adorable phone cover this summer.  Get this one and other cute Popsicle prints at Peanutoak Case’s Etsy shop.

5.  These aren’t edible at all!  They are crayons.  How amazing is that?  I found this image on Pinterest.  Which led me to Etsy…only to discover that the listing is no longer active.  I’m guessing you can melt down crayons and cool them in a Popsicle mold.  You’re creative.  I know you’ll figure it out.

6.  I dig these nails from Lacq Lustre.  She did them herself and shares all the colors she used.  So even if you don’t make the mini Popsicles, you can still have some poppy color.

7.  And lastly…I searched high and low for the tissue paper that started this whole thing.  I couldn’t find it.  What I did find was this adorable wrapping paper from Clementine Store.  Now who do I know with a summer birthday…?

2013 In Review

Happy New Year!  It’s hard to believe we have entered another year.  If your life is anything like mine…it’s felt like a whirlwind ever since Thanksgiving.  Yikes.  But now the festivities are behind us and it’s time to learn from the past year and step into a fresh, new season.

The year goes by so fast that I often feel like it passed in a blur.  {Any one second that?}  I have to remind myself that a year is a long time.  A lot can happen.  One life can do a lot in one year.  I really believe that and I hope you do too.  For me 2013 could have been a very hard, negative year…but I think we chose how we spend our time and resources and energy.  We can let negative circumstances weigh us down…or allow them to give us a chance to brush up on our hurdling skills.  I may have banged my shins on hurdles a few times in the past 365, but I can confidently say that I cleared them all.

And if you don’t believe a lot can get done in a year…let’s look back at the biggest moments of a year with Amy Allender. (more…)

Gather Together

Thanksgiving Place Setting

Did you have a happy Thanksgiving?

I sure did.

As most of my holidays go, the day revolved around being in the moment with family and friends.  Oh, and it also involved quite a bit of food too.  I’m a big fan of eating later in the day so that there isn’t a big rush with baking the turkey.  It also takes away the need for a second giant meal of the day…we do dinner, pie, tea, games and bed time.  Eating at dinner time {instead of that awkward 2pm “lunch”} gave everyone time for a little Thanksgiving activity time.

For Derek and my dad that meant time in the field hunting.  For mom and me it meant time at the gym for a little turkey trot {aka an hour on the treadmill.}  Of course we were home in time for THE parade.

You like the place setting in the photo above?  I thought you might.  I bought a new {cheap} table cloth from Target’s Threshold line.  I just love that stuff.  Then I topped it off with a runner made from some unhemmed gingham fabric I had in the basement.  My favorite part of the table was the place mats I whipped up.  They are paper bags I ran through the printer {cut to 8.5″ x 16″ long} with this adorable free printable.  Paper bags! {And you know how I like paper bags.}

On the menu:

An herb rubbed turkey stuffed with sliced apples.  It was just enough sweet.  Mashed potatoes mashed with nonfat Greek yogurt, milk, chicken bullion, garlic and green onions.  Homemade yeast rolls that Mom and I worked on throughout the afternoon.  Jiffy corn casserole {it’s a classic, but I sub Greek yogurt for the sour cream called for in the recipe.}  Sweet potatoes with cinnamon and pecans.  Apple butter.  And the prettiest part of our meal, apple cider sangria.  Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the few days of the year I have a glass of wine, and I can’t think of much prettier than this sangria with pieces of apple floating in the glass.  And since Derek doesn’t drink at all {ever} he had his non alcoholic.  Just cider with apples in a fancy glass.  {Which means this can be a fancy drink for the whole family.}

As much as I like cooking and setting the table, my favorite part of the day is sharing a meal with a table full of people I adore.  After the meal comes something I like even more than eating…games.  Then of course, hot beverages {tea, coffee, cocoa} and pie.  Between activities there is lots of chatter, story telling and foolery.  I love the rhythm of Thanksgiving at our house.

Where’s my mom?  Probably on the couch with Derek and me…occupying my dad’s lap after dinner was his “lap” dog.

This year was very special because the living room was taken over by the chalkboard for mini sessions.  But for us it only added to the merriment because it meant that I could take Katie and Sean’s Christmas photos.  Here’s a peek.  You’ll have to wait a few days for the rest…

Something Delicious {Pumkin Coffee Cake}

Pumpkin Coffee Cake Recipe

I love this recipe.  It’s one that I wrote a few years ago for Thanksgiving.  This year, I busted it out early.  Because it’s really that easy and that good.  And the batter tastes amazing, so the bowl is totally worth licking.  Here’s the recipe.

Pumpkin Coffee Cake Recipe

You have a couple options for glaze.  Super easy route:

Buy a can of cream cheese frosting from the store.  Heat it up in the microwave for a few seconds at a time, until it’s liquidy and smooth.  Drizzle it over the cake.

Make it yourself:

Put 1/2 block of cream cheese in a bowl.  Microwave it until it’s soft.  Mix in 1/2-3/4 cup powdered sugar {depending on how sweet you like it.}  Add a Tbsp of milk to get a glaze consistency.  Keep adding milk little by little until you have a drizzle-able consistency.

Then eat it.  Or share it.  Or both.  But be sure to pair it with a good, hot drink.  That’s the best.

Go Bananas {Twins Baby Shower}

I’m so excited to be showing you some highlights for a baby shower I threw yesterday.  Not only was it fun, it was super special because it was a shower for…not one…but two babies!  Yes, that’s right, twins!

The best part of any shower {for me at least} is picking the theme.  And boy, did I go threw a long brainstorming session before choosing a theme for yesterday’s get-together.  I mean, how often do you get to celebrate two babies at once?  To make things even more exciting my friend Kim is expecting one of each. A boy and a girl!

After lots of list making, and learning that the nurseries will be decorated in a jungle/monkey theme I decided on “Two Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.”  Okay, okay…enough of the chit-chat.  Here’s the highlights.

I started with these custom invitations:

Monkey Baby Shower Invitation

Then my awesome-amazing-wonderful friend Emily helped me create a fun afternoon full of monkey business.

Monkey Baby Shower

1.  This was our killer dessert table.  I made this Go Bananas banner with scrapbooking paper.  The letters were made in Microsoft Word.  I drew a gray circle and added each letter within a text box.  I printed them from home, cut them out and taped them to the banner.

2.  During the shower we split into two teams for a Banana-Grams face off.  Each team had to make as many baby themed words as possible in 4 minutes.  The team with the fewest letters leftover wins.

3. Emily prepared all the food.  We tried to keep the non-dessert foods healthy, so she prepared chicken salad and veggie trays.  I hung some quick and easy tissue paper pom poms from my light fixture for a little pazazz.

4.  On the dessert side we put together a banana split bar.  Complete with all the fixings.

5.  Emily made this amazing monkey bread.  I’ll be honest.  It tasted like I was eating magic.

Monkey Baby Shower Diaper Writing

Guests spent time writing notes to the parents-to-be on diapers…to lighten the mood of those late-night changings.  I was so pumped when i found these Luvs with monkeys on them.

Better Together Baby Shower Game

Our second game was created by yours truly.  On one side was a list of 25 famous pairs.  Guests had to fill in the missing half.  They ranged from Milk and {Cookies} to Ginger Rogers and {Fred Astaire}.  The second list included 10 celebrities.  Guests had to choose five that are actually twins.  {Did you know that Vin Diesel is a twin?}

It was such a fun day!  I cannot thank my partner in crime enough.  Isn’t Em just adorable?  She’s the best.

Hope you got some good ideas!

It’s a Marshmallow World in the Winter

Last night we hosted our annual Jingle Mingle holiday party.  Of all the parties I have the privilege of hosting every year, the one we host at Christmas is my favorite.  This year I kept things simple by setting up a hot chocolate bar {with all the fixin’s} and of course cookies and treats.

Clever Christmas Party Invitation

Here are my tips for a stellar hot cocoa bar.

1.  Set out a canister of hot chocolate instead of packets.  {So guests can make it as strong as they like.}  A recipe for my mix is below.

2.  Offer a variety of stir ins.  Crushed peppermint, whipped cream, marshmallows, cream, and Kalua are all good options!

3.  Keep the milk hot.  Don’t send guests running to the microwave.  Keep the moo juice warm in a crock pot.

In addition to cocoa powder I also made those cute hot-chocolate-on-a-stick’s that have been cropping up all over the Internet.  Now, don’t be intimidated.  They really were not as hard as you’d think.  I followed this recipe for the chocolate blocks…and used this Alton Brown recipe for the marshmallows.

Hot Chocolate on a Stick

Word to the wise…Homemade marshmallows are the bomb.  So good!  And don’t freak out if you don’t have a fancy Kitchen Aid mixer.  I used a little hand mixer and it worked just fine.

When I poured the fudge blocks into my pan I sprinkled crushed candy canes on top to make a rich peppermint hot chocolate block.

When just stir into a cup of hot milk.  Very tasty!

To make your own hot cocoa mix follow this recipe:

Mix all these ingredients together…

1 Cup unsweetened cocoa powder | 1 Cup powdered sugar | 1 tsp cinnamon

To make flavored hot cocoa mix these ingredients together…

3/4 Cup unsweetened cocoa powder | 3/4 cup powdered sugar | 2/3 Cup of your favorite flavor dry coffee creamer {like CoffeeMate}

Stir 3 spoonfuls into a mug of hot milk.  Yummm!

If nothing else…make the marshmallows.  Thank you to Make & Takes for the awesome idea that has swept Pinterest this holiday season.  You rock!

See you tomorrow!
