I’m Amy Allender. I’m interested in all kinds of things. Although my skills are more varied than particular…the one thing I can’t get enough of is Bible study.

I’ve always been a voracious learner. Because of this insatiable appetite for knowledge, I am constantly learning new things and quirky tricks. I love stories and books and facts. I rarely watch a movie without looking up the trivia on IMDB. I like finding out how things work. My mind rarely rests and that’s okay because there are so many amazing things to learn about.

Above all the things I explore and learn about is the Bible. It’s the one subject that never gets boring or tired–because no matter how long I study there is always something new to discover. I’m a full-fledged Bible geek and I don’t mind admitting it. Since committing my life to Christ, God has used Scripture to do miraculous works in my life. He has brought me clarity, dispelled lies, renewed my mind, guided me, comforted me, taught me and sustained my faith. Through the Truth of His Word God has also brought me healing and walked me through a battle with depression, anxiety and fear.

Because of this, I am passionate about the Bible and I want to help others step into a place of passion for the Word—or further fuel their love of studying Scripture. Whether you are a full-fledged geek like me or a pre-full-fledged Bible geek—I’m so excited you are here and I am honored to learn alongside you.

Because I want us to be real friends…you should know a few other things about me.

My legal name isn’t Amy Allender. I’m actually Amy Smith–but I still write and work under my maiden name. I married my best friend in 2009 (we really were best friends before dating and I’ve got the embarrassing photos to prove it). Life with him is super fun. We own the cutest cat in the world (seriously, I’ve checked and she’s the cutest.) Her name is Panda and she isn’t black and white.

In addition to Bible study, I love board games, playing the accordion, playing duets on the piano, hiking, lakes, traveling, hot beverages, talk radio, audio books, England, old movies and lots of other weird things. I’m also super into home renovation projects—so when I’m not doing the things listed above, I’m usually working on a project at my house or someone else’s. I get nervous when I meet people, I talk with my hands, and hats fit my head weird. I grew up in Northern Indiana and love living in the midwest. Right now I live in Rapid City, SD and love every moment of it. Previously I lived in North Dakota and it was fabulous. Seriously, don’t hate on ND because I’ll defend it relentlessly.

On a more professional note…I came to know Jesus when I was 13. I’ve spent my adult years working in a variety of ministries–especially those focused on women and youth. In 2012 I spearheaded an effort to launch an outreach to women in the sex industry, called Daktoa Pearls. I was trained and affiliated with the Strip Church and worked locally with a fabulous co-leader and volunteer core. My love of teenagers drew me to work as a youth leader, teacher and mentor at my local church.

Additionally, I hold a degree in telecommunications/ broadcast journalism–which God has used to hone my skills in research, question-asking, public speaking, story-telling, and written communication. From 2012-2016 I operated Amy Allender Productions, a company that offered marketing, photo and video, as well as artistic design services to individuals and nonprofits.

My heart is particularly tender for brothers and sisters battling depression and anxiety. I know first-hand what a difficult minefield it is to navigate–whether you are walking through or holding the hand of a loved one. I firmly believe this deep sadness and fear is a tool used by the enemy, fueled by lies to thwart God’s work through His people. However, I also believe God’s Word and Truth can provide healing. If you are walking in this shadow, please know that you are not alone, damaged, or doing Christianity “wrong.”  It is not an easy journey, but there is hope in Christ–the Way, Truth and Life.

Statement of Faith | I Believe…

  • there is one God.  He is the God of the Bible.
  • the Bible is the Word of God. “Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:16-17)  Because of this, the words of the Bible are true and trustworthy.
  • all people have sinned and need of a Savior.  (Romans 3:23-24)
  • Jesus is the Messiah. He died for the sins of the world and rose from the dead.  He is the only way to Salvation, God the Father and eternal life in heaven. Salvation comes only from belief in Him, through faith.
  • the words of the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. (I have no affiliation with the site linked.)

For years I’ve written and blogged about all kinds of things. I worked for myself as an artistic freelancer (graphic design, web design, photography, teaching art, etc.) Everything I did and loved was seen and written about here at Amy Allender {dot} com. I’ve been blessed and humbled by the positive feedback I got from my writing and the friends I made because of it.

However, between spring and winter of 2016 I prayed about the direction my writing and blogging should take. I believe God has called me to focus on sharing resources that help others more deeply engage with the Bible. You can still read old posts here—but eventually they’ll probably be taken down. As for my love of home improvement—yes, I’m knee deep in projects (what else is new??). But to keep content tailored and consistent, I’ll be blogging my latest home on a new site all its own. I promise I’ll let you know when that happens.
